Changing Apple ID When You Have One With @me.com, @icloud.com or @mac.com
If the email address that you have associated with your Apple ID has @me.com, @icloud.com or @mac.com in the end, you’ll only be able to change it to a different email address having one of these in the end and if it has already been associated with the account you’re using. When you change this email address, it will also change the ID being shown to others when they share stuff with you as well as the ID shown by Apple when they refer to your Apple Account.
So, here are the steps you’ll have to follow on Apple ID account page in order to change your Apple ID.
- Visit apple.com
- Login to your account
- Click Edit from Account section
- Click on ‘Change Apple ID’ option under the Apple ID you see.
- An email list will show up where you’ll be required to select the Apple ID you want to choose. You’ll only be able to use the email addresses already linked to your account. You can see these email addresses by checking the ‘Reachable At’ option in Account section.
- Select one as you like. Remember, you’ll only be able to change your ID to one of @me.com, @mac.com and @icloud.com email addresses.
- Now, click on Continue
That’s all you have to do and your Apple ID will successfully be changed to the one you have selected in the above process. Remember, however, that if you’ll attempt to change the ID to @icloud.com address that you have made within last month, it is possible that you get a message to try later. It may not also be possible for you to change the email address using Settings on your iOS device.
Changing Apple ID When You Have third Party Email Address
Now this is a totally different case. Before changing the email address associated to your Apple ID, you’ll be required to log out of all the Apple devices and services which are using that Apple ID. And if you want to change the ID from your iPhone, iPad or iPod then you have the liberty to stay signed in only on the device being used for changing the ID.
As you change the Apple ID, you’ll be able to enter some other 3rd party email as your new Apple ID that you want to use in future. Alternately, you can also add @me.com, @mac.com or @icloud.com email address which is linked to your account already. For viewing these email addresses, make sure that ‘Reachable At’ option is checked in Account Section.
So, if you want to know how do I change my Apple ID using an iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 10.3 or a later version, here are the steps to follow:
- Go to Settings and tap on [your name]
- Tap, Name, Phone Numbers, Email
- Tap Edit in front of ‘Reachable At’ and delete the current Apple ID listed there
- Tap on Continue
- Provide the ID that you’d like to use from now on
- Tap on Next
Now, if you want to change the ID from Apple ID account page, follow below steps:
- Visit appleid.apple.com
- Login to your account
- Click on Edit in Account section
- Click on ‘Change Apple ID’ option under the Apple ID you use
- Enter your desired Apple ID which you intend to use in future
- Click on Continue
If your newly provided Apple ID ends with @me.com, @mac.com or @icloud.com then a message will be shown asking you to confirm the ID you want to use. Remember, once you have changed it to one of these email addresses then you may not be able to change it back again to some 3rd party email address. The former 3rd party email address associated to your Apple ID will now become additional email for the Apple account you have.
Remember, however, that if you’ll attempt to change the ID to @icloud.com address that you have made within last month, it is possible that you get a message to try later.
Verify The New Email Address
When the Apple ID is changed to some other 3rd party email, you’ll be required to verify the new account. Once you’ve entered the new address, you will get verification code on that same email. Entering that verification code received on your email address in the designated fields will allow you to complete the verification process and start using the new Apple ID. Now, you can also sign in to all your Apple devices and services again with the new email address.
So, if you didn’t know how do I change my Apple ID, using one of the above methods will allow you to change it. Just make sure you choose the right one according to the email address currently registered with your Apple ID. If there are any queries, you can get in touch right away.
