How To Delete The Zip Files In Mac OSX Automatically After Unzipping Them

OSX offers in-built support for the zip archives and allows users to not just open and extract the zip files but also create them as well. So, you do not need any kind of additional software whatsoever for that.

Usually, when user clicks the zip archive twice, the contents present in that archive are extracted by the OSX. However, the original file is left behind in the existing location. So, one can say that the files that are left behind only create clutter and do nothing else because one may not need those files again. To be fortunate, one can make changes to the OSX settings to unzip files differently. By changing these preferences, the files will be deleted automatically once they have been extracted.

Here is the procedure to change settings for deleting files automatically after unzipping them.

How To Open Archive Utility In OSX

You first have to access the Archive utility app file that is hidden deep in the system folder of your OSX. Browse System>Library >CoreServices> Applications >Archive Utility.app. Here you can either browse the folder manually or can also search for this Utility using Spotlight. So, no matter which route you take, locate Archive Utility .app and open it.

HOW TO DOWNGRADE FROM IOS 10.3.2 TO IOS 10.3.1

Once the app is launched, click Archive Utility in Menu Bar of your OS X. Now select Preferences.

What You Can Do In Preferences Window

The Preferences window is usually divided in two parts with specific options for configuring different settings related to the way files will be extracted and created. The top section of this window allows you to make changes to how the archives are extracted. Usually they are extracted to same folder, but you have to set different location for storing contents of the extracted files. It is a good option to go for if you often have to extract archive files from different locations and you want all your unarchived content to go in same folder.

How To Change The After Expanding Option

There is an option “After Expanding” with the help of which you can set what should be done with original archive after extracting it. Rather than leaving the file in original location, the Archive Utility can be directed to move extracted archives to Trash, move it to some other location or permanently delete it (by bypassing Trash and immediately removing the file).

So, if you don’t want the file to be removed immediately then it can be set to be moved to the Trash folder. The changes that are made here will immediately take effect and you do not have to reboot or save anything.

Just decide what you want to do with the extracted files and change the settings accordingly using above mentioned steps.
