The iOS 11 as well as the accompanying ARKit framework made Apple the big fish in AR arena within no time.
As the games and apps capable of utilizing all that AR brings to the table, Apple has started making major progress already in pushing this technology to its limits.
There’s a recent report that claims Apple has an intention of taking things to the next level, leaving iPhone/iPad behind, by coming up with an AR/VR headset of its own.
The report from CNET claims that the headset Apple is working on will continue company’s legacy in Augmented Reality and will even take it to next step to offer a super-immersive gaming experience by combining both VR and AR into its next headset.
The project codename within Apple is believed to be T288 and it will bring a headset with two displays having 8K resolution for each. Now, what this means is that the users will be getting 16K resolution to look at which really is mind boggling. It will be a self-contained product and won’t need the users to have an iPhone or a Mac for handling its heavy lifting.
Previously, Bloomberg had reported on such a headset potentially coming from Apple in 2020 and, with this latest report from CNET, the same timeline seems to be accurate. Apple is working concurrently on it along with another ongoing project that is related to AR glasses and the component makers are lined up already for allowing the production of these glasses.
Even though the project is down in the pipeline rather than full-on headset approach, it is still possible that the product is canned by Apple before introducing it into the market. There are lots of ideas that the company throws against the wall without making them public, but all of these ideas don’t make way into the stores.
