US Government Backs Apple In The Tax Evasion Case

In a recent report from Reuters it was outlined that the US government has lodged an application in General Court of European Union in the bid to intervene with the tax evasion case to which European commission and Apple are the parties. This really shows the stature of Apple and the kind of backing they’ve got.

The hearing of this case will expectedly be starting in 2018 and it is basically an appeal from Apple after losing their previous case which accused them of getting state aid from Ireland that was illegal. Though Reuters didn’t cite the name of their source in the report, it claimed that the US government has intervened in the situation and it appears that they want to ensure that biggest name of the country doesn’t have to forcibly pay a huge fine that is expected to go as high as € 13 billion.

The source said, “I can confirm United States filed the application with General Court of European Union for intervening in the case that involved retroactive state aid rules application to Apple”. However, the sensitivity of the matter prohibited the source for being open to quoting the name.

If you are not yet familiar with what the case is all about, European conducted a 3 years long investigation after which it concluded that Apple got illegal state aid that came from Ireland. It is also believed that Apple paid anywhere between 0.005% to 1% to Ireland in terms of taxes over a period of 11 years.

The original ruling of the court was not accepted by either of Ireland and Apple and both appealed against it and a new case is what we’re all waiting for. It is expected to begin the next year. The official statement from Ireland said the country doesn’t do deals with the taxpayers but European Commission doesn’t seem to agree with what they have to say.
