As GDPR is now on everyone’s mind, there’s a lot of scrutiny being performed on personal data and the way it is used by companies. Responding to the current scenario, Apple has now allowed its users to download all their data being held by the company about them including everything from history of the apps usage to their purchase history.
Stats are available related to the Game Center as well as everything else such as history of AppleCare support as well. By allowing the users to be able to download all their data, the company has allowed them to know what it keeps on its very servers.
Here we have listed the steps that one has to follow in order to get access to all such data on Apple’s servers and there’s nothing complicated about it. However, even though Apple is allowing it for its users across the world, currently the offer is for everyone in EU and Iceland, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
As soon as you request the said data, Apple says it is bound to provide it to you inside 7 days and it’s your choice what you’d like to be included in your data dump. Remember, however, that including stuff like iCloud Photo Library will increase the file sizes significantly.
So, here are the steps that you need to follow for requesting the copy of your data with Apple.
- Launch your browser and head to privacy.apple.com. Remember that it will not work on your iPhone and you need to be on your PC to continue.
- Login with your desired Apple ID and go through the 2-factor authentication as prompted.
- Some privacy page will now show up. Click on Continue for moving forward.
- In the section labeled ‘Get a copy of your data’, click on ‘Get Started’.
- You will now see quite a few different categories and your choice here will decide what type of data you want Apple to provide you. Just check the categories that you want and if you want everything to be sent to you just click on “Select All”. Once ready, click on Continue.
- If you have lots of data to be copied, the files can get so large that you find it hard to download them in one go. On the next page, however, you are given the option of choosing the desired file size for the downloadable files. You can keep the size anywhere between 1GB and 25GB allowing Apple to split the data into smaller chunks of your chosen file size.
- Finally, click on Complete request and that’s all.
You will then receive an email from Apple that will tell you that they’re dispatching your data and the progress can be tracked through privacy.apple.com/account as well.
