iOS 11 initial beta version has already been released by Apple and everyone registered to Apple’s Developer Program can have access to it. Aside from all the improvements and new features that have been added, Apple has decided to drop support for the years older 4” iPhone 5 as well as iPhone 5c.
Typically, support is there for current major iOS version minus one but due to the iOS 10 they’ve had to support everything back to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c until now. But now the new iOS 11 will not support that hardware anymore. The reason behind that is it’s very much confirmed now that iOS 11 will not offer support for any 32-bit devices now. It’s been a while since we are having warnings from Apple about the change that is coming through iOS alerts informing that any 32-bit applications won’t work any longer in upcoming iOS versions.
With this confirmation, it is official that Apple is expected to drop the support for quite a few devices and the ones that will be supported now will only be 64-bit devices.
So, here is the compatibility chart for iOS 11 beta that will be helpful in determining if your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch will support the new operating system once it is released later in the year.
Device Name | iOS 11 Supported Models |
iPhone | iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s |

iPod Touch | iPod Touch 6th Generation |
So, even though the support for the older 32-bit devices has been revoked by Apple, we still have an extensive list of hardware that is compatible with the new iOS 11. The upcoming iPhone 8 will also make it to this list as soon as it arrives later in 2017. Same would be the case with any upcoming iPod Touch models.
If you have one of the models of iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch that are listed above, you’re lucky to enjoy the upgraded iOS 11 as soon as it makes its appearance in the public later this year.
